The View from Inside: One-day Conference with Editors and Agents 7:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m. Pre-Conference for those new to writing for children. Hahn University Center (East Campus) University of San Diego Featuring Editors & Agents Confirmed Faculty: Lindsay Davis, Junior Agent, Writers House Manuscripts Critiques: Our guest editors, agents and published authors will First Pages: Does the opening of your story have what it takes to capture an editor or agent? Find out. Submit the first 150 words of one of your stories postmarked on or before Feb 12, 2008 and your beginning may be read anonymously as part of the conference first page panels. Include your name and contact information in the upper left hand corner and the type of genre (picture book, middle grade, young adult, nonfiction) in the upper right hand corner. One 'first page' per conference registrant. Illustration Gallery: Illustrators, you are invited to display a 16”x 20” vertical, self-standing “gallery” of your work. Any brochures, business cards or postcards must be contained within the 16”x 20” self-standing display. RSVP to reserve your space by March 5. Please no handouts on the table or original art – the gallery will be located within public space at the University. Bring your display with you to the conference. Illustration Critiques: Michele Wetherbee, art director, Harcourt Children's Books will be conducting 15 minute portfolio critiques for conference attendees. Registration for illustration critiques must be postmarked on or before Feb. 12, 2008 and include a check for $45 payable to SCBWI-San Diego. Include with your registration up to six color photocopies with your name and contact info on the back. Payment can be sent with illustrations or separately. If you prefer email, you can email up to six illustrations (72 dpi) as a PDF file by Feb. 12, 2008 to jyuwiler@gmail.com with your name as part of the file name. The day of the conference, bring your portfolio with up to 8-18 pieces of your strongest work. Artwork should be prints of high quality (300 dpi at 100%), or good color photocopies. You may bring a picture book dummy if you choose. (Note: you will only have 15 minutes so plan accordingly - if you bring too much, you won't have much time to discuss what you brought.) Appointment times will be given at conference check-in. Limited space available. Must be registerd for the conference. Note: parking will be tight on East Campus – please carpool if at all possible.
